A species from the Pontic steppes which expands as west as Transylvania, southern Pannonian Basin (Serbia) and Ludogorie Tableland (northern Bulgaria). In Romania it is a common presence only in the yet well preserved xeric and mesoxeric steppe grasslands of Transylvania (especially the south-western Transylvanian Plain) being extremely rare in Moldavia (3-5 localities) and Dobrudja. Its range in the Romanian flora is in a continuous regress. The species can easily be distinguished from all the other Linum species by its very large pale lilac flowers and the much wider leaves, of a caracteristical lanceolate form.
